Slumber

*Anna Borowa*
Some
Time
Along
The
Line
It
Seems
I Stopped
Remembering
My
Dreams.
Comatose,
I Lay
There
Like
The
Dead,
A
Vacuum
In
My
Head.
I Miss
The
Panorama
Of
The
Nightly
Drama,
The
High
Adventure
And
Romance
As
I Dance
Away
The
Hours,
Scattering
Drowsy
Flowers.
Lately,
I Only
Float
In
A
Steady
Boat
Of
Sleep,
The
Voyage
Silent,
The
Water
Deep.

The
Weather
In
New
Mexico
Can
Quickly
Go
From
Ninety
To
Five
Below.
Before
Any
Leaves
Began
To
Fall,
The
Temperature
Swan
Dived
And
Winter
Arrived.
The
Puppy
Ran
Happily
To
And
Fro,
Leg
Deep
In
Snow,
And
There’s
Little
To
Do
Until
The
Desert
Sun
Breaks
Through.

Faithless,
Human,
Freshness
Dwells
Between
The
Knells
Of
Church
Bells.
Not
Gold
Cathedrals,
High
And
Proud,
But
Humbler
Shelters
For
The
Crowd
Huddled
Within
Their
Muted
Chime,
Beleaguered
Dreamers,
Marking
Time.

Sliding
Toward
Winter
Like
I’m
On
Wheels,
And
How
Suddenly
Chill
It
Feels.
Summer
Days
That
Kept
Me
Warm
No
Longer
Charm
The
Sun,
Hold
The
Winter
Season
Within
Reason,
Stay
Fair
And
Heat
My
Chair,
But
No.
The
Forecast
Calls
For
Snow.

My
Dear,
Here
I Praise
The
Fathomless
Grace
In
The
Planes
Of
Your
Face,
And
The
Tilt
Of
Your
Chin.
I Can’t
Begin
To
Find
A
Way
To
Say
All
The
Compliments
I’d
Like
To
Pay.
So
Long,
And
Thanks,
My
Rowdy
Lad,
For
Being
So
Marvelously
Bad.

I Staggered
Out
At
The
Crack
Of
Dawn,
To
Have
Blood
Drawn
For
My
Physical
This
Year,
And
Stepped
Into
A
Zone
Of
Silent
Fear.
Shouldering
This
Task,
I Sat
There
In
My
Mask,
With
Random
Sensations
Of
Suffocation.
Filled
With
Determination,
I Waited.
And
I Waited,
For
What
Seemed
Years,
Debating
Breaking
Into
Frustrated
Tears.
Finally,
My
Turn
Came
And
Afterward,
I’ve
No
Shame
To
Say
I Was
Extremely
Glad
To
Get
Away.

The Greats

Dead
Far
Longer
Than
They
Lived,
Their
Age
Long
Past,
Their
Lavish
Words
And
Music
Last.
Sad
To
Say,
In
The
Chaos
Of
Today,
The
Arts
Suffer
Like
Our
Broken
Hearts.
No
Paintings
Illustrate
The
Challenge
Of
Our
Fate,
Track
Our
Sighs,
Or
Deftly
Trick
Our
Eyes.
Genius
Has
Gone
Under
Ground,
And
It
All
Invites
A
Turn
Around.
Somewhere,
I Know,
Music
Hums
In
A
Rush,
And
An
Artist
Picks
Up
A
Brush.

I’m
Keeping
Track
Of
Mars,
Ascending
Through
The
Stars,
Dark
Layers
Deep,
Rising
As
We
Sleep.
The
Planet
Has
No
Place
For
The
Flailing
Human
Race,
And
Slides
Away
Before
We
Capture
It
As
Prey
And
Without
Heart,
Add
It
To
Our
Sky
Chart.
We
Have
No
Grace
To
Tend
Our
Home
Place,
Polluted
By
Our
Greed,
And
Must
Satisfy
The
Need
To
Fly
In
A
Race
To
Outer
Space,
Before
We
Die.

Picture
The
Desert
Is
Moving
Continually
South,
And
When
The
Wind
Blows,
Breathe
Through
Your
Nose,
Or
A
Portion
May
Wind
Up
In
Your
Mouth.
I Try
Not
To
See
Dust
On
The
TV
And
The
Shelf,
But
I Can’t
Help
Myself.
Life
Is
Too
Brief
To
Give
Myself
Grief
Over
Constant
Dust
In
My
House,
Soon
I’ll
Get
Around
To
Sweeping
It
All
Back
To
The
Ground.

I’m
Storing
Up
Autumn
Sunshine
In
A
Cup
On
The
Window
Sill
To
Guard
Against
The
Coming
Chill.
Winter
Isn’t
Here
Quite
Yet,
But
You
Can
Bet
It’s
Bringing
The
Daily
Cost
Of
Misty
Wet,
Crisp
Frost,
Then
Snow
Will
Ice
New
Mexico.
No
Fear,
It
Happens
Every
Year.
I’ll
Cherish
My
Teacup
Of
Sun,
Until
The
Wintertide
Is
Done.
